Event Details

In 2018 Dr. Tanya L. Saunders, a professor of Latin American studies at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, realized that she had an archive of audio-visual materials, some almost twenty years old, from her research on Cuban artivism. Together these materials highlighted a debate, a conversation, among Black women of various positions in the Cuban society, about femininity, sexuality and negritude in Cuba. With the help of student Jimmy Everett, Dr. Saunders completed Afro-Feminisms in Cuba: Perspectives from Havana. This film is not a definitive story; it is a project that shows that yes, these debates about black women in Cuba exist, that yes, it is part of a history that began with Cuba, that yes, Black women in Cuba are documenting this history as it unfolds and there are different perspectives, and yes, there are numerous diverse, community-based initiatives centered on the empowerment of Black women.

This event is free. We are suggesting a $5-$20 donation and a box of menstrual/incontinence pads or tampons for donation to local women's and homeless shelters at the door.
