About our Speaker
David Lawrence Jr. is a nationally renowned children’s advocate and the founder of the Children’s Movement of Florida, a non-partisan organization that seeks to make children a legislative priority.
Mr. Lawrence was a key figure in passing a statewide constitutional amendment to provide pre-k for all 4-year-olds.  He holds 13 honorary doctorates from various institutions, including one from his alma mater, the University of Florida’s College of Journalism, and a degree from the Advanced Management program at the Harvard Business School. Prior to his work as a child advocate, Lawrence served as the publisher at the Miami Herald.
An endowed chair in early childhood studies is established in his name at the University of Florida Anita Zucker Center for Excellence in Early Childhood Studies.  He was appointed by the Governor to the Board of Trustees of Florida A&M University in 2015.

About the Jacob Lawrence Exhibition at the Harn
History, Labor, Life: The Prints of Jacob Lawrence
This exhibition provides an overview of influential American artist Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000). Lawrence was primarily concerned with the narration of African American experiences and histories. His acute observations of community life, work, struggle and emancipation during his lifetime were rendered alongside vividly imagined chronicles of the past. The exhibition is organized by the SCAD Museum of Art and is made possible with support from the Jacob and Gwendolyn Lawrence Foundation.
